The Royal Canine Academy
Gemma & Family
I'm Gemma, the owner of the Royal Canine Academy. I've been working with dogs for over 20 years, caring for high-drive working dogs - Shepherds, Bullies, Terriers, Collies etc.
I'm also the owner and operator of Detect and Protect K9.
Gemma and Rosie's Story
When I brought home my first Malinois, Rosie (a rescue), I thought I had it all figured out:
-
Hire a trainer
-
Social classes
-
Visit dog parks
-
Enroll in daycare
-
Commit to daily walks and training
-
Buy all the gear—harness, leash, treats, bed
Happy ending, right?
Not even close.
Despite my best intentions, Rosie became anxious, reactive, and aggressive. What I didn’t realise then was that this challenge would lead me to become the trainer I am today. I've been there, and done that when it comes to dog training. I spent literally thousands on equipment, trainers, and enrichment for Rosie. I've done the off-leash social classes, dog parks and positive-only training classes - only to come full circle and become a trainer that's helped thousands of dogs and their owners live better, more fulfilled lives.

A Family-run Business
My family assist me in caring for the dogs that stay with us, and they get involved with training sometimes too. Each of my children have their own unique set of skills that make them fantastic dog carers, trainers and owners.
Every dog is unique and requires a different approach.
My oldest son is a patient leader, and many troubled dogs gravitate to him because of his calm presence.
My daughter is kind and compassionate, and she has a natural ability to soothe nervous dogs.
My youngest son has an innate ability to make even the most fearful dog feel safe enough to play.
I may hold the professional certifications, but my family make my work possible.
